All of these bodies have been lowered on the chassis, lightened by removing the inside or air dams added front side and rear. They ran faster and were raced with great enjoyment.
Custom Light Weight Racing Bodies
Number 29 was the BMW I raced the most. It is a miracle that the re-designed and mounted wing never broke off. I guess that was due to the cars ability to stay on the track.
AFX Ferrari Daytona Coupe Tomy BMW 320i Tomy Camaro GT
BMW with lights removed and sealed and that radical wing remount... but it worked.
Lights were removed to reduce weight and improve cooling of the motor.
Modified rear wing for rear down force... I didn't think of adding magnets back then.
Picture below shows the inside with all of the weight removed vs a stock chassis. It also shows the attached air dams on the front and sides for both cars and the lights removed, but sealed on the left chassis to properly use aero dynamics. Slots in air dams were cut for the brass track contact clearance and wide enough to clear all corners.
Although this car has been raced, wrecked and repaired a lot, it is one of my favorites. I always loved the GM muscle cars. This was lowered and the air dams put on the front, rear and sides. The cut outs in the front were for the contact clearances.
Tomy Camaro GT
I had to much time on my hands.
Very light body!
No weight in this chassis
<< Notice the cut out air scoop.
Tomy Jaguar XJR Lightened and lowered.
Tomy Porsche 962 that has been lowered. Notice how close the chassis is to the ground. This was always my complaint on the Tomy GTP cars, so I corrected it.
Tomy BMW M1 and the Ferrari Testarosa
This pictures show how thin the body is now. It is a lot of work, but the results are worth it.
These are good pictures of the cut out side vents.
Tomy Ferrari Testarosa. Left car is stock while the right car was lowered and lightened.
These pictures highlight the ride height difference. Note the additional air dam on the modified car and the open air intakes on the side. This was a result of removing plastic from the inside of the car.
AFX G+ Daytona Ferrari.
Without question, this is my favorite racing car.
